  Billie Ray Martin returns with another dancefloor smash in The Glittering Gutter – the latest single taken from her new album The Soul Tapes. With club bangers from Offer Nissim, Dave Aude and Tweaka Turner, The Glittering Gutter is already rapidly ascending the Billboard Dance Charts in the U.S. The buzz first became apparent when videos appeared on YouTube showing 1000s of clubbers with hands in the air, singing the lyrics along to the Offer Nissim mix.
  
  A breathtaking remix by U.K. outfit Mooli and the experimental tweakings of the Dale Cornish Soho Nocturnal Remix affirm Billie’s status as the queen of electronic soul. With rave reactions from U.S. DJs and clubbers alike, this promises to be a European smasheroo, with U.K. promotion starting now.
  
  The Glittering Gutter is Billie’s tale of the red light district of Hamburg where she grew up, and what it has become, now the golden days are over and decay has long replaced the glamour that once created opportunity for its inhabitants. Her heartbreaking vocal performance rips the listener apart with every line. ‘But for the smalltown voyeur she’s just the glittering gutter’ she whispers and later describes the Reeperbahn: ‘her teeth falling out, a carcass alive’.
  
  Billie has never been easy to categorise. Clearly a soul singer, her career however has seen her mostly as a pioneer of house and electronic music, most notably her groundbreaking work with Electribe 101 and her seminal solo hit Your Loving Arms – now considered one of the all time classics of dance music. Her explorations have led her further into the worlds of ambient music and drum & bass among other areas of electronica. Recent releases have seen her going back to her house roots.
  
  Her new album The Soul Tapes is a ‘first’ for Billie: no electronic music this time. Billie realised her long-held dream of recording an album that is equally influenced by Hi-Records (Al Green, Ann Peebles, Willie Mitchell) as it is by ’60s garage records.
  
  Recorded at New York’s 900 Broadway Studio with multi award-winning producer / co-writer Jon Tiven, who has produced albums for Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack and Willie Nelson amongst many others, the album takes the listener on a journey through all things soul and rhythm & blues. The results are convincing and powerful and show once again Billie’s refusal to conform to trends, preferring as she does, to create them. Billie Ray Martin describes herself as “a kid from Hamburg’s red-light district, who wanted to be a soul singer, but ended up playing repetitive machine music, while still trying to be a soul singer".
